The Disaster Emergency Committee, which comprises 15 UK and international charities, including Christian Aid, Cafod and The Red Cross are appealing for donations to help charities and their local partners in Ukraine and neighbouring countries provide food, water, shelter and medical assistance.
Not only are you able to gift aid donations, but at the moment the government is match funding donations to the DEC.
Almighty God we pray for the situation on the border of Ukraine.
We pray for those who live in fear, that you may grant them peace.
We pray that the voices for discernment and peaceful solutions may prosper.
Lord, we ask that you raise up peacemakers on all sides, that war and violence might be averted.
Give diplomats wisdom, understanding and build trust.
We ask for the church in the nations involved, may they be salt and light in a dark situation.
Lord we lift this dangerous situation to you. May your kingdom come, Amen.
Loving God, We pray for the people of Ukraine, for all those suffering or afraid, that you will be close to them and protect them.

Many people want to donate goods for Ukraine’s people and refugees and can do so locally to newly started aid groups. But please only send the items requested, as space in the lorries taking aid is precious.
Ordinary clothing, books and toys are not currently needed – local charity shops still welcome these though, especially as donations to them have dropped at this time of emergency. Some are sending funds to Ukraine.
Some donors are putting short messages of support inside, for example, drawings of Ukraine’s national flower, the sunflower, and the country’s rallyng cry, “Slava Ukraini” (Glory to Ukraine).
The following information was checked and accurate as of Saturday March 5th. Most of these groups are on Facebook, and will provide updates if asked.
Please check which convoys want what – some are prioritising. But, in general, the following are needed:
Camping type equipment (small) including batteries, torches, candles; strong, sensible shoes, thermal underwear and winter over-clothes, in good, clean condition; nappies, personal hygiene products; painkillers, first aid and medical items, including bandages and plasters; blankets, duvets, sleeping bags, pillows, sheets, all clean – there will be no chance there to wash things – and canned and instant food, that does not need heating, including wet and dry food for pet cats and dogs.
Volunteers are often welcome who can sort, pack, provide storage, drive, answer messages, collect funds for petrol, etc.
Katie Fowler, a member of Ross on Wye & District Community Association, is sending aid to Lublin in Poland. Lubln has asked in particular for ‘Bedding, as they need things for people to sleep on. They also need coats, hats, gloves, underwear.

A truck load of aid has already been sent and another truck is leaving on Wednesday March 9th.

It has a permanent base and expects to continue collecting donations for some time. It is on Facebook and the local press has described its work.

An emergency road closure has been put in place on the B4234 between Kerne Bridge and Walford Timber due to the existing rock slope showing signs of on-going degradation. Balfour Beatty said a full road closure has been put in place to prevent risk to the public. An exact timescale for the closure can not be given, but at the moment it is estimated to be approximately 10 days.
